Good to knowThis guide is put together by students, not by professionals or official bodies. It is meant to help you and your parents through enrolment and settling into life in Slovenia. Some details may change or become outdated, so always check the official sources and confirm anything important with the relevant institutions. We take no responsibility for wrong, outdated or misunderstood information — but we are always glad to help. If you spot something that is not right, please tell us in the “Was this page helpful?” box at the bottom of the page.

Eligibility

The system covers students enrolled at Slovenian higher-education institutions who have student status and are not employed or self-employed in the excluded categories and are not receiving a pension other than a family pension. Foreign full-degree students meeting the conditions are included.

Current amount

From 1 March 2026, the state meal subsidy is €5,19 per meal. This is not the final price of every meal. The student pays the difference between the restaurant price and the subsidy.

  • The student pays the supplement

When older FAQs or articles conflict, follow the current government rule.

Annual renewal and city access

Renew the right for each new academic year using current enrolment evidence. Subsidised meals are not limited to Ljubljana. The official system includes providers under the Ljubljana, Maribor, and Primorska student organisations and across Slovenian study centres, although the number of providers varies. A student is not limited to providers in the city of enrolment.
