Good to knowThis guide is put together by students, not by professionals or official bodies. It is meant to help you and your parents through enrolment and settling into life in Slovenia. Some details may change or become outdated, so always check the official sources and confirm anything important with the relevant institutions. We take no responsibility for wrong, outdated or misunderstood information — but we are always glad to help. If you spot something that is not right, please tell us in the “Was this page helpful?” box at the bottom of the page.

EMŠO

EMŠO is the Slovenian personal identification number. A foreign applicant may use a temporary eVŠ identifier during application. The actual EMŠO is assigned later through the Slovenian institution or authority.

Check that the name is correct, the date of birth is correct, and the number is consistent across university and state records.

Slovenian tax number

Use form DR-02 (available in English). A foreign natural person can submit the request personally, through an authorised person, or by post. Prepare identity evidence and supporting documents. The official FURS page on the tax number for a foreign natural person explains how to get it and states that the certificate is normally issued within eight days. You may need it for student work, a bank, digital identity, tax procedures, and contracts.

SI-PASS and smsPASS

SI-PASS provides access to electronic public services. For smsPASS registration, the current official requirements include a SI-PASS account, Slovenian tax number, EMŠO, mobile phone, and identity verification. Do not wait for smsPASS to begin an eVŠ study application if another permitted login method is available.

Bank account

Compare monthly fee, card fee, online banking, international transfers, ATM access, student package, required residence evidence, and closing conditions. A Slovenian account is commonly needed for student-work payments and some scholarships. For a step-by-step walkthrough of the providers and documents, see our blog guide on how to open a Slovenian bank account as an international student.

Phone

Begin with prepaid service if your residence and financial situation are not stable. Before signing a subscription, check contract duration, termination fee, required documents, roaming, data limits, eSIM, and network coverage in your city.

University digital identity

Every university has its own account system: a student information system, university email, Moodle or another e-classroom, timetable, exam registration, certificates, eduroam, and Microsoft 365 or similar tools. At University of Primorska the enrolment number forms the username and the STUDO app can combine email, timetable, grades, exam functions, a digital student identity, and building access.
