Are you a foreign citizen of Macedonian origin living in Slovenia or another eligible country? The Ministry of Education and Science of North Macedonia is offering 50 scholarships for undergraduate studies at public universities for the 2026/2027 academic year.
The application deadline is 31 August 2026. Applications must be submitted through the diplomatic or consular mission of North Macedonia in the country where the candidate lives. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.
This guide is based on the official 2026/2027 call. Requirements and deadlines may change in future academic years, so always check the latest information before applying.
1. Who can apply?
The scholarships are intended for foreign citizens of Macedonian origin who live in:
Albania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Slovenia, Kosovo, Türkiye, Romania, Montenegro or Greece.
Candidates must have completed four years of secondary education and apply for a first-cycle undergraduate programme. A total of 50 scholarships are available.
Candidates indicate one preferred faculty and two alternatives in the application. The Ministry reserves the right to make the final placement from the three listed choices.
2. What does the scholarship cover?
The scholarship supports students during the regular duration of their undergraduate programme and covers:
- university tuition or participation fees;
- a monthly scholarship;
- accommodation and meals in a student residence selected by the Ministry;
- primary health insurance;
- the costs of issuing and renewing the temporary residence permit.
The scholarship does not cover programmes taught in English or preparatory Macedonian-language classes. Students must also cover the cost of recognising, or nostrifying, their secondary-school documents.
3. Which documents are required?
Candidates must complete the official application form and submit:
- A CV and motivation letter, explaining why they want to study in North Macedonia and naming one preferred faculty and two alternatives.
- Proof of Macedonian origin, usually a birth certificate stating Macedonian ethnicity or another appropriate document proving Macedonian origin.
- A copy of the certificate for completed four-year secondary education, accompanied by a translation and an explanation of how the grades correspond to the Macedonian grading system.
Only a photocopy of the secondary-school certificate is initially requested, allowing candidates to apply elsewhere at the same time.
4. How do you apply?
The completed application and supporting documents must be submitted to the diplomatic or consular mission of North Macedonia in the country where the candidate lives.
For applicants living in Slovenia, this means contacting the Embassy of North Macedonia in Ljubljana. Candidates should confirm the opening hours, submission method and any additional translation or document-certification requirements before applying.
The final deadline is 31 August 2026.
5. What happens after selection?
Selected students must act quickly after the final results are published.
Within five days, they must submit a request for recognition of their educational documents to the relevant department of the Ministry of Education and Science. The student covers the related costs.
Selected candidates must arrive in North Macedonia no later than ten days after publication of the final list. Candidates who do not arrive within this period will be considered to have withdrawn.
Because these deadlines are strict, applicants should prepare translations, travel plans and the documents required for recognition in advance.
6. How do you keep the scholarship?
From the second academic year onward, students must submit proof of regular enrolment and show that they passed at least 60% of the examinations planned for the previous academic year.
These documents must be submitted personally to the Ministry by 30 October each year. Students who do not meet the academic and administrative requirements may lose the scholarship.
7. What should you consider before applying?
This opportunity can significantly reduce the cost of studying in North Macedonia, but candidates should research their preferred study programmes carefully.
Because English-language programmes and preparatory Macedonian classes are not covered, applicants should confirm the language of instruction and make sure they can follow the programme. They should also plan for costs not covered by the scholarship, including document recognition, travel and other personal expenses.
The most important first steps are to research suitable programmes, contact the diplomatic or consular mission in your country of residence and prepare the required documents well before 31 August 2026.
For students of Macedonian origin living in Slovenia, this programme offers an opportunity to complete undergraduate studies in North Macedonia with support for tuition, accommodation, meals, health insurance and temporary residence.
